On this day in the Civil War, the Federal steamship called Chattanooga arrives in Chattanooga with 40,000 rations and tons of feed. Union troops and animals are back to full rations after the siege by Confederate forces.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate General Nathan B. Forrest and his men capture the Federal steamer Mazeppa on the Tennessee River. Confederate troops under General Abraham Buford had previously built the trap.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate troops under General James Longstreet make a night attack on Federal troops at Brown’s Ferry (close to Chattanooga, Tennessee). The attackers are driven back after intensive fighting. The purpose of the attack was to cut the Federal supply line, called the “cracker line”, into Chattanooga.
