On this day in the Civil War, General William T. Sherman’s Federal army occupies Atlanta, Georgia after several months of campaigning.

Sherman says, “Atlanta is ours, and fairly won.”

On this day in the Civil War, the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia occurs with the South victorious. Union General Philip Kearney is killed during the fighting.

On this day in the Civil War, General Hood’s Confederate army attacks the Federal army commanded by General Oliver O. Howard.

The Battle occurs near Jonesboro, Georgia, with the Confederates taking 10 times the number of casualties as Federal troops.

On this day in the Civil War, Union General John Fremont declares martial law in Missouri. Though not authorized by President Lincoln, Fremont declares all slaves to be free.
