On this day in the Civil War, Union General William Rosecrans attempts to deflect criticism of his handling of the Battle of Chickamauga, by bringing charges against subordinates General McCook and General Crittenden. Eventually the 2 generals are exonerated by a court of inquiry.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate guerrilla’s led by “Bloody” Bill Anderson loot and burn Centralia, Missouri. During the day they capture a train and kill over 20 unarmed Union soldiers. Later that day the guerrilla’s ambush a column of Union Cavalry and kill another 100 Federal soldiers.
