On this day in the Civil War, Union troops under General David Hunter defeat Confederate forces at the Battle of Piedmont, Virginia.

The Confederates suffer 1,600 casualties including 1,000 prisoners.

On this day in the Civil War, North Carolina votes for secession. This becomes the eleventh and final state to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.

On this day in the Civil War, Congressman Clement Vallandigham, a copperhead involved in anti-war activities, is banished to the South under orders from President Lincoln.

On this day in the Civil War, General Philip Sheridan is appointed to command the district west of the Mississippi River.

Due to Sheridan’s reputation for destruction the South is extremely upset.

On this day in the Civil War, the Union army under General Grant defeats General Pemberton’s Confederates at the Battle of Champion’s Hill.

The casualties of this battle are considered to be the most severe of the entire Vicksburg campaign.
