On this day in the Civil War, Federal troops, including the 54th Massachusetts colored infantry, unsuccessfully attack Battery Wagner, South Carolina.

The commander of the 54th Massachusetts, Colonel Robert G. Shaw is killed in the attack. As a show of disrespect Confederates bury Colonel Shaw in a mass grave with his slain colored troops.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard requests reinforcements to stop a Federal advance in Virginia.

Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston is ordered to travel with his troops to Manassas, Virginia.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate troops under General Joseph E. Johnston build fortifications around Atlanta, in anticipation of the arrival of General Sherman’s army.

On this day in the Civil War, the Southern ironclad Arkansas is attacked by the Federal fleet on the Mississippi, but escapes without severe damage.

The Arkansas inflicts almost 80 casualties on the Union fleet.
