On this day in the Civil War, Union troops under General David Hunter defeat Confederate forces at the Battle of Piedmont, Virginia.

The Confederates suffer 1,600 casualties including 1,000 prisoners.

On this day in the Civil War, after the horrific battle of Cold Harbor, both Federal and Confederate armies stay behind their entrenchments, listening to the entreaties of Union wounded.

On this day in the Civil War, the Federal army under General Grant is defeated at the Battle of Cold Harbor. In a half hour’s time 7,000 Federal troops become casualties.

General Grant states, “I regret this assault more than any one I have ever ordered.”

On this day in the Civil War, Federal troops under General U.S. Grant prepare for an attack on the Confederate line at Cold Harbor, Virginia.

A Union officer observes an ominous sight, “I noticed that many of the soldiers had taken off their coats and seemed to be engaged in sewing up rents in them. On closer examination it was found that the men were calmly writing their names and addresses on slips of paper and pinning them on the backs of their coats, so that their dead bodies might be recognized and their fate made known to their families at home.”
