On this day in the Civil War, Federal General Oliver O. Howard is severely wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia. General Howard’s right arm is amputated due to the injuries sustained in the Battle.

General Philip Kearny, who had lost his left arm earlier, attempted to console Howard by saying, “I am sorry General, but you must not mind it; the ladies will not think the less of you.” Howard laughed and replied,”There is one thing we can do General, we can buy our gloves together!”
