On this day in the Civil War, Federal General George B. McClellan is relieved from command of the Army of the Potomac by President Lincoln. McClellan’s reluctance to pursue General Lee’s Army ultimately led to his removal.

President Lincoln is purported to say, “Sending reinforcements to McClellan is like shoveling fleas across a barn.”
