On this day in the Civil War, Confederate troops under General A.P. Hill battle Federal forces led by General Gouverneur Warren at the Battle of North Anna River in Virginia. The fighting is indecisive.

On this day in the Civil War, General Henry Halleck leads Union forces at Corinth, Mississippi against a Confederate army led by General P.G.T. Beauregard. General Halleck assumed command of Grant’s army one month earlier after the Battle of Shiloh.

General Halleck’s nickname was “Old Brains”.

On this day in the Civil War, Union General George McClellan continues to request more troops from President Abraham Lincoln, to join the Army of the Potomac. Throughout General McClellan’s Civil War career, he significantly overestimates the size of the Confederate Army and demands additional troops.

After the Antietam campaign,  President Lincoln confides to a friend that he “had tried long enough to bore with an auger too dull to take hold. He (McClellan) has got the slows.”

On this day in the Civil War, North Carolina votes for secession. This becomes the eleventh and final state to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.

On this day in the Civil War, Congressman Clement Vallandigham, a copperhead involved in anti-war activities, is banished to the South under orders from President Lincoln.
