On this day in the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln gives his State of the Union message to congress.

Lincoln says, “We cannot escape history…in giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free.”

On this day in the Civil War, General John B. Hood’s Confederate army attacks the Union army commanded by General John Schofield at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. This battle, known as the “Gettysburg of the West”, ends in a devastating loss to the Confederates. The Rebel army loses over 6,000 men and 6 Confederate generals are killed.

On this day in the Civil War, Confederate forces under General James Longstreet attack Federal positions at Fort Sanders near Knoxville, Tennessee. The attack fails and Federal troops occupy Knoxville to the end of the war.

On  this day in the Civil War, Union troops commanded by General James Blunt attack Confederate positions at Cane Hill, Arkansas.

Union losses total 40 men, while the Southern total is 435.

On this day in the Civil War, Federal General Benjamin Butler’s floating headquarters, the steamer Greyhound, blows up on the James River. This act is apparently Southern sabotage against the Union.
