On this day in the Civil War, the Confederate raider Shenandoah surrenders to British authorities. This raider destroyed Yankee whaling ships in the Bering Sea as late as June 28, 1865…over two months after hostilities officially ended.

On this day in the Civil War, Federal General George B. McClellan is relieved from command of the Army of the Potomac by President Lincoln. McClellan’s reluctance to pursue General Lee’s Army ultimately led to his removal.

President Lincoln is purported to say, “Sending reinforcements to McClellan is like shoveling fleas across a barn.”

On this day in the Civil War, congressional elections in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Wisconsin see Democrats elected to office. Democrat Horatio Seymour is elected Governor of New York.

On this day in the Civil War, Union General George Thomas sends the Federal IV Corps to Pulaski, Tennessee in anticipation of a threatened invasion by the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

On this day in the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln is invited to the dedication of a new cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa.

He is asked to make “a few appropriate remarks” , but the main speaker will be orator and statesman Edward Everett.
